Premier Prix du 50ème au « Concours International de Besançon » en 2007, Darrell Ang a remporté le Grand Prix, le ‘’Prix du public’’, ainsi que l’unanimité de la part des musiciens de l’orchestre. Il a également remporté le prix du Concours « Arturo Toscanini » à Parme en 2008.

Né à Singapour, Darrell Ang est violoniste à la base mais a étudié également le piano et le basson. Des prédicats tel la ‘’Summa Cum Laude‘’ réçue au conservatoire de Saint Petersbourg et de l’Université de Yale en classe de direction sont nombreux. Il s’est perfectionné avec Jorma Panula et a suivi les cours d’interprétation auprès de Sir Colin Davis et de Lorin Maazel ainsi que J.E. Gardiner. Cofondateur en 2001 du ‘’St. Pétersbourg Chamber Philharmonic’’ Darrell Ang est fréquemment invité à l’Opéra de Saint Pétersbourg où il a dirigé « La Traviata » et les « Nozze di Figaro » ainsi que de Britten « The Rape of Lucrecia ». Darrell Ang retourne régulièrement à St Petersbourg pour collaborer au festival des « Nuits Blanches »

Réinvité systématiquement, il retourne cette saison à « L’Orchestre Philharmonique de St Petersbourg », à l’Orchestre Philharmonique de Strasbourg et à l’Orchestre national de Lyon, il est retourné à plusieurs reprises à l’Orchestre National d’Aquitaine à Bordeaux qui lui a confié dans cette saison deux productions symphoniques ainsi que la direction de la « Flûte enchantée » de Mozart et un concert avec Truls Mork en février 2010.

Outre la France, le jeune chef qui habite Londres, a effectué cette saison ses débuts avec le Konzerthausorchester Berlin, le Philharmonia London ainsi que l’Ochestre Philharmonique de Radio France, dont un DVD à paraître chez NAIVE témoignera. La fin de la saison le verra à Milan pour un programme Mendelssohn auprès de l’orchestre La Verdi di Milano.

Darrell ANG a été nommé Directeur Musical de l’Orchestre de Bretagne en janvier 2012 pour 3 ans.

Un statut très particulier s’offre à Darrell Ang à l’Orchestre Symphonique de Singapour qui vient de créer pour la première fois dans son histoire centenaire le poste du « Young Associate Conductor » pour le jeune chef.

Lors de la nouvelle production de la Flûte Enchantée de l’Opéra de Bordeaux en janvier 2010, Forum Opéra écrit : « Darrell Ang, jeune prodige de la baguette qui dirige là son premier opéra en France, se met au diapason de la production, sans prétention, ni religiosité. Sa direction fraîche et enjouée achève de nous réconcilier avec une œuvre que trop de cérébralisme nous avait fait désaimer… »

Since January 2012 Darrell Ang is the Musical Director of the Orchestre de Bretagne.

Winner of the 50th Besançon International Competition in 2007 – which brought out in its past conductors like Seiji Ozawa and Gerd Albrecht – DARRELL ANG was awarded the Grand Prix by the distinguished jury which included Michel Plasson and Yan-Pascal Tortelier, the ‘Prix du Public’ as audience favourite, as well as the top vote of the musicians of the competition orchestra. He was also the winner of the 9th Antonio Pedrotti International Competition for Conductors in 2006, and recently won the 8th Arturo Toscanini International Conducting Competition in 2008.

Born in Singapore, he studied at the St. Petersburg Conservatory and at Yale University. His teachers include Jorma Panula, Sir Colin Davis and Lorin Maazel. In 2001, he co-founded and directed the St. Petersburg Chamber Philharmonic and was a frequent guest conductor at the St. Petersburg Opera – where he has led productions including “La Traviata”, “Le nozze di Figaro” and Britten’s “The Rape of Lucretia” – as well as at the Rimsky-Korsakov State Opera & Ballet Theatre, working closely with soloists from the Mariinsky Theatre Academy of Young Singers.

Since attracting international attention at the Besançon and Toscanini Competitions, he has appeared with orchestras around the world including the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orquestra de Cadaqués, the Residentie Orkest in The Hague and the New Japan Philharmonic Orchestra. He took the Yale Symphony Orchestra to Carnegie Hall and has made highly noted débuts in France all followed immediately by re-invitations: the Orchestre National de Lyon, the Orchestre Lamoureux for another concert at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris, the Orchestre de Cannes and the Orchestre National de Bordeaux-Aquitaine offered him – besides two more symphonic concerts – Mozart’s “Die Zauberflöte” at the Grand Théâtre de Bordeaux.

More first appearances include concerts with the Copenhagen Philharmonic, the Orchestra della Toscana in Florence, the Taiwan National Symphony and return visits to the Singapore Lyric Opera – for a coproduction with the Nice Opera House in Les Contes d’Hoffmann, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Strasbourg, the Wiener Kammerorchester and the Orquesta de la Radio Televisione de Espana in Madrid.

A special relationship has developed with the Filarmonica Arturo Toscanini: besides Rossini’s ‘Il Viaggio a Reims’ in Piacenza this summer, Darrell will conduct numerous symphonic programmes in Parma and open the season there in october. A special status has arisen with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra as well: there, he takes up position as ‘Young Associate Conductor’, a post created especially for him.
